身在美國，但是唐人街的華僑多喊這個國家做『花旗』，有沒有貶義的成份呢？應該是沒有的。在香港時，如說理髮要剪個『花旗裝』，師父都會心領神會的，就是男裝短短、側邊分界那一種，大多數老一輩的美國人，仍然是保留著這個頭髮款式，數十年如一日。至於『花旗』真正的意思，是指有紅、白、藍三色的美國旗吧，這面『星條旗』就是代表美國，而美國國歌的內容，亦是歌頌這片色彩繽紛、顏色鮮艷的旗幟。

儘管，美國人會怎樣對待這面旗幟，他們可以拿來做窗廉、牆紙、領帶、胸衣，剪成內褲，甚至焚燒，是自由表達的一部份，但是，絕大多數人對這面『星條旗』，仍是滿懷敬意的，這當然包括華裔移民在內。在入籍考試中，若不懂得美國國旗上有多少星與條，顏色及其意義是怎樣，休想可以輕易過關，取得公民的身份。過去，中國認為這面『星條旗』是代表『美帝國主義的罪行』，『沾滿了亞、非、拉人民鮮血』的一面『不光彩』的旗幟，隨著中美關係的改善，中國官方新華網對這面美國旗，已有比較正面的介紹。

美國國歌總共分四段，但經常去唱的只是首節，在波士頓芬圍 (Fenway Park) 打棒球前，必定先唱才開波，在其他場合多奏而不唱。在奏或唱國歌時，為表示尊敬，要用右手按在左胸前，脫帽肅立，而向國旗行注目禮。這首名為『星條旗永不落』國歌的中譯如下﹕

說吧！在晨光曦微中仍可看到，
是什麼使我們如此歡騰自豪？
在黎明前一線曙光中，
是誰的一面星輝熠耀及寬雄的條旗，
冒著連天炮火，仍在碉堡中英勇地招展，
熊熊烈火，炮聲震天，
在黑夜中作見證，這旗幟依然聳立！
說吧！這星條旗是否會高高地，
在這片自由的土地上，
勇者的家園中永遠飄揚？

這首美國國歌，在寫作的過程中，亦包含著一段歷史。在1814年，英美在巴爾的摩市開戰，一名美國律師弗朗西斯。斯科特。克伊，為著營救被英軍拘留的朋友，到英營交涉，英軍恐其涉露軍情，把其關禁在英艦上，戰鬥終於在半夜打響了。弗朗西斯對戰況感到非常焦慮，在拂曉醒來，只見星條旗依然飄揚，情緒萬分激動，便拿了信封，用當時流行的飲酒歌，填上星條旗的歌詞，一星期後在報紙上刊出，很受歡迎。在1931年，經胡佛總統正式簽署成為國歌。

在星條旗歌詞誕生192年後，為配合移民維權運動，愛德華多。雷耶斯用西班牙文填上了新的歌詞，這首名為『我們的國歌』的另類國歌，已在4月27日開始在電台播放，目的是要說明美國是一個由移民組成的國家。布什總統隨即表示國歌應用英文去唱，引起不少反響。

美國是自由的國度，國歌可用不同的方法去演譯，有人用鄉村音樂、民謠、搖滾及爵士樂，各種各樣的形式去表現出愛國的情懷，又何需用語言去作限制呢？作為華裔，更想有心人，用普通話、廣東話、台山話、閩南話、福州話去填詞，來一個不同方言、語言的星條旗大合唱，那便更加肯定真正大融爐的意義了。

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
